CIPR is a private-public partnership dedicated solely to advancing intellectual property rights protection, enforcement and reform in the CIS countries and the Baltic states. Through research, education, legislative initiatives, coalition building and legal, judicial and regulatory reforms, CIPR assists governments and businesses in the region to establish transparent and non-discriminatory IPR regimes and to adhere to international IPR standards.

CIPR is an official observer at the World Intellectual Property Organization and the CIS Interstate Council on the Protection of Industrial Property. More

NEW CIPR CHAIR NAMED

Lucy Nichols, Director of Global IPR and Brand Protection, Nokia Corporation, was appointed Chair of CIPR’s Executive Policy Committee (EPC), which is comprised of representatives of corporate members and establishes policy priorities, oversees program and administrative activities. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and chairperson of INTA’s Anti-Counterfeiting Committee, and active in several other IP associations. She succeeds Anne Gundelfinger, Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Intel Corporation, who served as Chair from 2005 to 2007.

CIPR Briefs Embassies on Civil Code Initiative
On April 28, 2006, CIPR held a briefing in Moscow for Embassy representatives. The briefing covered the history and background on the Part Four to the RF Civil Code, as well as the content, impact and latest political developments of the initiative. More

CIPR has been actively lobbying and working with rightsholders to protest the Russian Government's new proposed IPR legislation, Part Four of the Civil Code, which has been prepared for submission into the RF State Duma. This draft would annul all special intellectual property rights laws, including the Law on Copyrights and Neighboring Rights, the Law on Trademarks, Service Marks and Appellations of Origins of Goods. The law was prepared by a group of lawyers, without preliminary consultations or agreement from those who the law is supposed to protect — rightsholders. More

On 3 March 2006, CIPR conducted a seminar on IP for Japanese companies in Russia at the request of JETRO. The seminar covered such topics as counterfeiting, bad-faith trademark registrations, corruption and key government officials. More
