CIPR/INTA ROUNDTABLE ON WELL-KNOWN TRADEMARKS – MOSCOW – DECEMBER 7, 2011

On December 7, 2011 Russian and international trademark experts gathered in Moscow to examine current and future challenges to protecting well-known trademarks. The event was hosted by Rospatent and co-sponsored by the Coalition for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR), International Trademark Association (INTA) and Baker & McKenzie.

The featured speakers were recognized thought leaders on protections for well-known trademarks, including Fredrick Mostert, Richemont, Nancy Omelko, U.S. Patent and Trade Organization, Dr. Vladimir Starzhenetskiy, RF Supreme Arbitration Court, Gordana Pavlovich, Cabinet Pavlovic East Europe, Lybov Kyriy, Rospatent, and Eugene Arievich and Michael Treis of Baker & McKenzie.

The speakers addressed critical issues, such as the significance of bad faith in trademark court cases and the role of the courts in shaping protections for well-known trademarks and principles for the certification of well-known trademarks.

Over 100 attendees were present for the interactive panel discussions. Rospatent General Director, Boris Simonov, underscored to the attendees the importance of viewing the protections of well-known trademarks from the perspective of a global economy and the need for laws to be harmonized. He also urged the international panel of experts to work together with Rospatent to develop research projects to examine guidelines for certifying well-known trademarks and approaches for addressing bad faith issues in court cases.
