| April 22-23 CIPR Enforcement Seminar in Ukraine  | Seminar Room | CIPR held a two-day seminar on April 22-23, 2002 in Kyiv, Ukraine on the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in Ukraine. CIPR co-sponsored this seminar with the Higher Commercial Court of Ukraine, the State Department for Intellectual Property of Ukraine, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce. More than 120 judges, government officials and experts participated in the seminar. CIPR brought to Ukraine more than 30 speakers from 10 different countries to share comparative experiences on various aspects of intellectual property law with fifty commercial court judges, law enforcement officials, trademark owners and others.  | Left to right: Volodymyr Zharov, SDIP First Deputy Chairman; Justice Dmytro Prytyka, Chairman, Higher Commercial Court of Ukraine; and CIPR President Peter Necarsulmer. | Seven panel discussions covered international IP treaties and national obligations; Ukrainian court practice in the resolution of trademark disputes; famous and well-known trademarks and geographic indications; international judicial practice in adjudicating trademark disputes; recent changes and amendments to Ukrainian IP legislation and experiences from neighboring CIS countries; enforcement and anti-counterfeiting; and success stories in enforcement practice. Chief Justice Dmytro Prytyka of the Higher Commercial Court in Ukraine emphasized the need for ongoing education and training for judges covering various aspects of intellectual property rights. The First Deputy Chairman of the State Department for Intellectual Property Rights, Volodymyr Zharov, highlighted the planned changes and amendments to Ukrainian legislation bringing it into TRIPS compliance. (CIPR will be hosting Mr. Zharov in Washington in May at the International Trademark Association annual meeting.) The Ministry of Economy's Evhen Shkarban provided a status report on Ukraine's negotiations for membership in the World Trade Organizations (WTO).  | Left to right: Judge Ingo Beckedorf (Germany); Vladislav Starzhenetsky, Russian Federation Supreme Arbitration Court; Peter Kelly, PBN Chairman of the Board; and, Valery Vyshkevy, Belarus Supreme Court. | Valery Vyshkevich, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus, outlined the functions and duties of the specialized patent court in that country while Vladislav Starzhenetsky of the Russian Federation Supreme Arbitration Court shared case studies on solving trademark hijacking and other trademark disputes through the Internet. Global anti-counterfeiting efforts and coordination was outlined by John Anderson of the Global Anti-Counterfeiting Group, followed-up by Erik Madsen of Interpol who outlined the agency's recent efforts to focus on intellectual property rights crimes and closer cooperation between law enforcement officials at national levels to reduce this global problem. This seminar for Ukrainian judges and law enforcement officials is the latest in a series of educational seminars sponsored by CIPR.
